White oak, built to order

White oak is one of the species we work with, alongside black walnut, maple, cherry, old growth redwood and exotic slabs. It's a light, tight-grained hardwood that suits Scandinavian, modern farmhouse and coastal rooms, and it pairs well with black steel bases.

White oak tables are built to order. Slab stock changes as pieces sell, so tell us you want white oak when you request a quote, and we'll show you what's on hand or source boards or a slab to suit your size. The photos on this page show finished work and slabs from the shop in other species, since every top we build is one of a kind.

Why white oak works for dining

White oak is hard and dense with a straight grain, and quartersawn boards show the ray fleck many people love. It holds up well to daily use, which is why it's a classic choice for dining tables and benches.

Slab top or glued-up top

Wide single white oak slabs are less common than walnut, so a white oak dining table may be one wide slab with a live edge, two book-matched slabs, or a top glued up from solid boards with squared sides. Each has a different look and price, and Dave will explain the trade-offs for your size.

  • Live-edge white oak slab, where a wide slab is available
  • Book-matched pair with a center seam
  • Solid glued-up top with squared or eased edges
  • Round, oval or rectangular shapes

Finish, color and bases

White oak can be finished close to its natural pale color or warmer. Bases can be black steel, a contrasting wood, or one of the Flowyline Design steel bases on our table bases page, which comes in dining, counter and bar heights.

Sizing your white oak table

Send the room size and your everyday and maximum seat count. Dave plans the length, width and overhang from that, along with a base that leaves knee and chair room. Bolt-on bases let the top come off for moving day.

Comparing woods

If you're deciding between species, walnut is darker and more dramatic, while white oak is lighter and calmer. Both make long-lasting dining tables. Visit the gallery to see slabs side by side.
