The base is half the table

A live-edge or river table top needs a base that carries its weight, leaves room for knees and chairs, and suits the look of the slab. Our past builds have used curved steel legs, black steel pedestals, a sculpted teardrop pedestal and a heavy X-frame base under a 2,500 lb old growth redwood slab.

Choosing base height

Base height sets what the table is. Flowyline lists five heights: about 28 inches for dining tables, desks and consoles; 16 inches for coffee tables; 20 inches for end and side tables; 34 to 36 inches for counter-height tables and islands; and 40 inches for bar tables. The top adds its thickness on top of that.

Sizing a base to your top

Flowyline's sizing guide suggests a base about half to two-thirds (50 to 70 percent) of the top's width, and for wood tops an overhang allowance of about 16 to 31 inches. For some models it also publishes a maximum round and square top size, listed below where available. Most of their dining bases are rated for 1,000 lb, coffee bases for 500 lb, and some heavy-duty dining bases for 2,000 lb. Long tops may use two bases. Dave checks the base against your actual slab before the build.

Finishes

Most Flowyline bases are matte black powder-coated steel. Some models also come in brushed gold, silver or dark gray, as noted below. Flowyline also takes custom size, color and design requests, which adds time. Base lead time is counted into the overall timeline for your table.

Custom pieces can take up to six months from design to delivery, depending on the slab, drying, resin work and the shop schedule. You get a specific timeline with your quote. Tables with a base are quoted together as one price, with no separate base price listed here. Delivery available, quoted per order; installation quoted separately.

The bases on this page are designed by Flowyline Design and shown with their permission, with their published dimensions. Dave at 1 of 1 Woodworker builds the wood top and fits it to the base.

What height base do I need for a dining table?

About 28 inches. Coffee table bases are about 16 inches, end tables 20 inches, counter tables 34 to 36 inches, and bar tables 40 inches.

How big a top can a base hold?

As a guide, Flowyline suggests a base about 50 to 70 percent of the top's width, and most dining bases are rated for 1,000 lb. Dave confirms the fit for your slab before building.

How long does a custom table take?

Custom pieces can take up to six months from design to delivery, depending on the slab, drying, resin work and the shop schedule. You get a specific timeline with your quote.

Can I see the wood before I order?

Yes. The wood gallery is at 1946 Railroad Street in Statham, inside Dave's Appliance & Home. Call (706) 614-7806 to schedule a visit and walk the slabs with Dave. If you're farther away, send room measurements and photos through the quote form, pick from slabs on the Shop page, and we send photos of your slab as the build goes.
