Why black walnut for a dining table

Black walnut is the wood clients ask for most. It has deep chocolate heartwood, pale cream sapwood along the live edge, and figure that shifts under light. Walnut also takes a finish well and works with almost any base, from black steel to a wood pedestal.

The Statham gallery usually has walnut slabs standing in the racks, so you can compare color, figure and width side by side before you commit.

Walnut tables from the shop

Past walnut pieces include the Midnight Sky black walnut river table with a deep blue epoxy river, a live-edge dining table with black resin fills on a curved steel base, a dark walnut oval top on a black pedestal, a walnut black-river table, a live-edge black walnut desk with butterfly joints, and a walnut slab kitchen island.

Live-edge, squared, or a walnut river

A walnut dining table can keep the live edge, have squared sides, or pair two slabs with a resin river. Natural checks can be held with butterfly joints or filled with black resin, which reads as part of the grain on walnut.

  • Solid live-edge walnut slab
  • Squared walnut top with a clean edge
  • Walnut river table with blue, black or clear resin
  • Round, oval or rectangular, depending on the slab

Sizing and bases

Tell us the room size and how many people you seat. Dave plans the length, width and overhang from that, then matches a base: black steel legs, a pedestal, an X-frame, or one of the Flowyline Design steel bases on our table bases page. Bolt-on bases let the top come off for moving.

Living with a walnut table

Walnut tops are finished to handle everyday meals. Wipe spills promptly, use trivets under hot dishes, and keep the table out of strong direct sun where you can, since walnut's dark color slowly warms and lightens with light exposure. Our care guide covers cleaning and upkeep for wood and resin tops.

Walnut dining table price and lead time

Walnut prices depend on the slab's width, figure and grade, so every walnut dining table gets a custom quote. If you'd like a walnut river table, resin river tables typically range from $5,000 to $20,000+, depending on size, wood species, resin colors and base style.

Custom pieces can take up to six months from design to delivery, depending on the slab, drying, resin work and the shop schedule. You get a specific timeline with your quote. Delivery available, quoted per order; installation quoted separately.
