Live Edge Slabs Near Athens and Atlanta: Pick Yours in Person

Looking for live edge slabs near Athens or Atlanta? Walk the slab racks at our Statham, GA wood gallery, pick a slab, and have Dave build your table from it.
Where to see live edge slabs in Northeast Georgia
If you are searching for live edge slabs near you in Georgia, our wood gallery at 1946 Railroad Street in Statham is worth the drive. It sits inside Dave's Appliance & Home, about 17 miles from Athens and about 56 miles from downtown Atlanta, just off the US 29 and GA 316 corridor.
At the gallery you can walk the slab racks, look at both live edges, and talk with Dave about what each slab could become. Every slab is one of a kind, so the one you choose becomes a table no one else can own.
Why see a slab in person
Photos flatten wood. Color shifts from screen to screen, figure that looks subtle can be dramatic in person, and it is hard to judge thickness, bark inclusions or cracks from a picture. Standing next to the slab answers those questions in seconds.
It also helps you picture the finished piece. Raw slabs look dull and rough before they are flattened, sanded and finished. Dave can show you finished tables in the gallery so you can see how a raw slab transforms.
Buying a slab vs buying a finished table
Some slab yards sell raw boards for you to flatten and finish yourself. Our approach is different: you choose your slab, and Dave builds your live-edge table, river table or custom epoxy table from it. That means the flattening, stabilizing, resin work, finishing and base are handled in the same shop.
Our Shop page lists raw one-of-a-kind slabs in the Statham shop right now. If you see one you like, contact us and ask about it.
What to look for in a slab
Whether you buy from us or anyone else, these are the things worth checking.
- Species: walnut is dark and rich, oak is lighter with strong grain, maple is pale and smooth.
- Drying: kiln-dried slabs are more stable for indoor furniture in Georgia's humidity.
- Size: make sure the slab is long and wide enough for your seating plan after flattening and trimming.
- Character: knots, burls, voids and figure add drama; voids can be filled with resin.
- Edges: decide whether you want both live edges, or two slabs paired as a river table.
Slab to table: what happens next
After you pick a slab, Dave settles the design with you: length, width, edge, river or solid top, base and finish. Voids and cracks can be stabilized with resin, as in our live-edge walnut dining table with black resin fills. If you want color, a river of tinted or pigmented epoxy can run between two edges, like our Midnight Sky black walnut table with its deep blue river.
Local clients can come back to see the slab after it is flattened and before the finish goes on. Our build timeline guide explains each stage.
Big slabs and statement pieces
Some slabs are monumental. The old growth redwood slab in our Projects page weighs about 2,500 pounds and was finished as a table on a custom X-frame metal base. Large slabs like that are best reviewed in person before a design is locked. Call (706) 614-7806 to schedule a visit.
Getting your table home
When the table is finished you can pick it up at the shop (bring a truck or trailer and helpers for large tops) or book delivery. Delivery available, quoted per order; installation quoted separately.
