A table maker about 26 minutes from Athens
If you live in Athens and want a custom table, you do not have to order one online and hope it looks like the pictures. 1 of 1 Woodworker, also known as Custom Wooden Tables, builds every table at 1946 Railroad Street in Statham, about 17 driving miles from Athens, roughly a 26-minute drive with no traffic.
The workshop and wood gallery sit inside Dave's Appliance & Home. The slabs are stored there, the epoxy for every river table is poured there, and the finish goes on there. When you visit, you are standing in the building where your table will be made.
Being this close changes how a commission works. You can choose a slab in person, come back to see it after it is flattened, and look at resin colors next to your actual wood before the pour.
What we build for Athens homes
Most Athens requests fall into a few categories. Each one is designed around your room, your seating and the slab you choose.
- Live-edge dining tables in walnut and other kiln-dried species, on steel or wood bases
- Epoxy and resin river tables with clear, tinted or pigmented resin
- Coffee, side and console tables built from burls and offcuts
- Kitchen islands, bar tops and countertops measured on site
- Benches and statement pieces for entryways and porches
Tables for Athens businesses and offices
Athens has a busy downtown, a growing office scene and plenty of restaurants and bars. A live-edge bar top or a custom conference table gives a space a look that cannot be bought from a catalog.
For commercial work, the closest reference is the live-edge conference table Dave designed and built for Akins Ford in nearby Winder. Its leg base was hollowed so electrical and data run through the structure, which keeps cords off the floor in a working boardroom. If you are planning a table for an Athens office, our conference table sizing guide is a good place to start.
Choosing between a live-edge table and a river table
A live-edge table keeps the natural edge of the tree and lets the grain carry the design. A river table splits or pairs slabs and pours resin between the live edges, so color runs down the middle. Our Midnight Sky table, black walnut with a deep blue epoxy river, is a good example of the river style.
Neither is better. It depends on the slab, the room and how much color you want. Our river table vs live-edge guide covers the differences in more detail, and Dave can show you both at the gallery.
How an Athens commission works
Here is the usual path from first call to finished table.

- Visit the Statham gallery or browse the Shop page to pick a slab.
- Settle length, width, edge, river or solid top, base and finish with Dave.
- Dave builds the table. Because you are close, you can stop by during the build.
- Pick up at the shop or book delivery. Delivery available, quoted per order; installation quoted separately.
Pickup and delivery around Athens
Because the shop is so close, many Athens clients pick up at Railroad Street. For a large top, bring a truck or trailer and a couple of helpers. If you would rather not haul a heavy slab, we deliver to Athens and surrounding towns like Bogart, Watkinsville and Winder.
Tell us about stairs, tight doorways and older-home layouts so the delivery and installation quote is accurate. Installation can mean attaching a base on site, leveling on an uneven floor or placing a top on cabinets.
Living with solid wood in Northeast Georgia
Solid wood moves with seasonal humidity. We prefer kiln-dried material for indoor furniture, and our care and finish guide explains how to keep a custom top in good shape. Buying from a maker down the road means that if a question comes up, you can call the person who built your table and bring it back to the same bench.
